Full-scale UF membrane challenge testing using biopolymer nanomaterials

Verifying the integrity of UF membranes at full-scale is currently achieved using MS2 bacteriophage challenge tests or pressure-based tests. There are no fully automated integrity test methods that can be performed at full-scale, online and in real-time.

Details

Challenge testing using novel fluorescent biopolymer nanoparticles (BNPs) has shown potential for replacing existing integrity tests for UF membranes at bench and pilot scale: WaterRA Project #2044 “Alternative ultrafiltration integrity test using novel nanomaterials”. However, the synthesis and stability of the BNPs needs further development to demonstrate their use at full-scale.

The project will demonstrate the ability to perform UF membrane challenge testing: online and in real-time; at full-scale; using readily available, low cost instrumentation; and with novel biodegradable fluorescent BNPs; leading to potential commercialization of this novel system.
