These workshops are held every two years, and provide an opportunity for researchers, government and industry people to get together and discuss recent events, research progress and emerging issues in cyanobacteria. Researchers from New Zealand also attend.

The cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) producing cylindrospermopsin are commonly found in drinking water sources
in Australia. Hence Australian researchers were early leaders in research worldwide into the toxic species Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii
and the toxin cylindrospermopsin. Following investigations of this toxin in the 1990s by research groups in Adelaide and Brisbane, the Cooperative Research Centre for Water Quality and Treatment approved funding for this study.
