Welcome to new member Sydney Water

September 16, 2019

Water Research Australia is delighted to announce its newest Industry Member, Sydney Water.

Sydney Water delivers high quality water, wastewater and recycled water services to more than five million people in Sydney, the Illawarra and the Blue Mountains. As an organisation, it actively invests in innovation internally and collaborating with the private sector, other utilities and universities to adopt and adapt technologies to deliver more and better services to customers.

Sydney Water has an innovative workforce and works hard to harness that creativity. It is looking to engage in a wide range of areas and to ensure utilisation of its own expertise for the benefit of Sydney Water and broader industries.

Sydney Water’s Science Research and Innovation addresses the following key themes:

  • Delivering safe and reliable drinking water – by understanding the long-term impacts on raw water of climate change and on the subsequent treatability, optimising treatment processes to minimise disinfection by-products and identifying and understanding emerging contaminants of concern.
  • Enhancing assets and operations – through enhancing service standards to improve and extend asset life and smart monitoring as well as sensing to enable proactive maintenance of assets.
  • Protecting and enriching natural waterways – by understanding chemicals of concern and their impact on the environment, smart monitoring programs to better understand the impact of wastewater on the environment and optimising decision support tools to predict the impact of its operations on the environment.
  • Improving treatment and resource recovery – through identifying energy generation and resource recovery opportunities and identifying and trialling new emerging technologies, all of which will contribute to the enhancement of circular economy.
  • Enhancing resilient and liveable cities – with the creation of climate resilient assets, new technologies for water efficiency and water sources to conserve water.

Within Sydney Water’s strategy, its key priority areas are leaks and breaks, the impact of drought on water quality and treatability, enabling the development of a circular economy, the impact of emerging contaminants on all its products and on-line sensing and, safety.

Becoming a member of WaterRA is an exciting opportunity for Sydney Water and it is looking forward to working with WaterRA and all its members.
