Rita has 12 years’ experience in water quality and treatment research, with a particular interest in the management of climate-driven, extreme water quality events. She leads an internationally-recognised, interdisciplinary team within the UNSW School of Chemical Engineering.
Rita’s two-year term has commenced following a long history with WaterRA, having served on the Education Committee, now Research Leadership Program, for nine years, with three as Chair. Rita has also been involved with our research program, supervising five WaterRA PhD students to completion, as well as participating in research projects.
“I am delighted to have been selected by WaterRA members as a Board Director,” Rita said.
“Having been a participant in WaterRA’s programs for over 10 years, I am excited to be able to contribute more strategically to the organisation and hope to use my experience to further guide the new Research Leadership Program as well as to enhance the pathways for research and industry collaboration.”
Karen Rouse, CEO of WaterRA, said she was pleased to welcome Rita and the depth of experience Rita will bring.
“I believe Rita will make a valuable contribution to the Board and her ability to build and sustain strong relationships across multiple water sector stakeholders will complement the Board’s existing mix of skills,” Karen said.
“Rita’s appointment also increases our Board’s gender diversity and we are excited to have this opportunity to work with Rita, as a passionate equity and diversity advocate, to help drive opportunities for the many talented women who work in water sector.”
The appointment of Rita to the Board follows the elections that were held earlier this year for one Industry Director position and three Research Director positions. WaterRA received seven high-calibre nominations for the four available places and would like to thank all the nominees for their willingness to commit their time and effort to our BIG Team.
Two-thirds of WaterRA members voted and along with Rita Henderson appointed as Director (Research), the following candidates were re-elected:
We would like to congratulate all new and returning candidates on their election to the Board for a two-year term, that commenced at the October 2019 AGM.
WaterRA also extends its thanks and appreciation to Professor Richard Stuetz of UNSW, who has stepped down as Director, for his considerable and highly-valued contributions during his time on the Board.
