WaterRA students win prestigious water awards

March 21, 2019

Water Research Australia students, past and present, celebrated success at the Australian Water Association's NSW Branch Awards earlier this month.

WaterRA student Florence Choo, from the University of New South Wales, won the Student Water Prize her her research Real-time Monitoring of Cyanobacteria: Validation of Fluorometers as a Tool for Optimising Treatment ProcessesFlorence is a final year engineering PhD student at UNSW and was a visiting research student at SA Water.

"Florence joined WaterRA in 2016 following the award of a WaterRA PhD scholarship and the Nancy Millis Memorial PhD Award," WaterRA Research Capability Manager, Carolyn Bellamy, said. "Florence’s supervisor is Dr Rita Henderson at UNSW and Florence has consistently demonstrated commitment and a passion for science. This is a great reward for all her hard work." Florence's work focuses on monitoring cyanobacteria in real-time for drinking water processes.

Former WaterRA student, Dr Yulia Shutova, now a professional water engineer with AECOM, won the Young Water Professional of the Year Award. In 2010, Yulia made a decision that formed the next four years of her life, recalls Carolyn. "New to Australia Yulia decided to attend OzWater'10 and as fate would have it sat next to Dr Rita Henderson [UNSW]," Carolyn said. "As two women in science only know how, they struck up conversation and Rita soon became Yulia’s supervisor at UNSW.

"Yulia applied for and was awarded a 2011 WaterRA PhD Scholarship and joined WaterRA (WQRA) as a PhD student undertaking a project in Monitoring Organic Matter Removal in Drinking Water Systems using Fluorescence Spectroscopy. Yulia has always been, and continues to be, engaged with WaterRA and we wish her all the very best for her career and continued success."

Yulia is also an accomplished researcher and has published a dissertation and over 10 journal and conference articles in collaboration with water utilities, research organisations and universities.

The winners of this year's NSW Water Awards will automatically be entered into the equivalent National Australian Water Awards category, which will be presented this year at Ozwater’19 in Melbourne on 7-9 May 2019. WaterRA wishes both Florence and Yulia all the best at the national awards.
