Sarah's Honours project, Smart Monitoring for Microbial Risk Assessment, has involved measuring the stability of host faecal DNA markers in environmental water samples using PCR assays.
Drinking water is produced from sources, such as reservoirs, rivers, ground water and sea water. Identification of faecal contamination of source water is essential to determine the risk to human health and the level of water treatment required to make safe drinking water. Sarah's project aims to develop DNA-based assays for identifying faecal contamination in water to improve our understanding of public health risks from source water.
Sarah's project has been supported by SA Water, and her supervisors are Dr Fiona Young (Flinders University) and Dr Paul Monis (AWQC, SA Water).
