The aim of the project was to develop a rapid, reliable and sensitive molecular diagnostic tool for the detection, identification and quantification of toxigenic cyanobacteria. A rapid, inexpensive and reliable tool to assess the toxigenicity of ‘algal’ blooms will thus represent a critical service to the industry allowing management decisions to be made from an informed position underpinned by cutting-edge science.
