Background and Relevance

This project explores ceramic membrane technology as a novel desalination pre-treatment process that can lead to cost and maintenance savings compared to conventional polymeric membranes. Saline secondary effluent is a viable source of water, but reverse osmosis (RO) desalination of this water requires robust upstream pre-treatment. To achieve this, polymeric membranes require large quantities of cleaning chemicals and regular replacement.
