Water Research Australia is proud to launch the Dennis Mulcahy Memorial Award, a new annual honour within our Research Leadership Program that recognises exceptional students with a passion for science and a commitment to the future of the water industry.

This award celebrates the legacy of the late Professor Dennis Mulcahy—an inspiring researcher, mentor, and tireless advocate for students. Throughout his distinguished career at the University of South Australia, Dennis supported over 100 graduates through their research journeys and helped shape the next generation of water leaders. His dedication to student success, hands-on mentoring, and contribution to science and education left a lasting impact across our sector.

About the award

The Dennis Mulcahy Memorial Award recognises a student who embodies Dennis’s spirit of initiative, dedication, and scientific curiosity. The recipient will receive:

  • $5,000 WaterRA Associate Student Membership, offering professional development, networking, and collaboration opportunities

  • Recognition from across the national water research community

  • A platform to connect with peers, industry leaders, and research mentors

Who can apply

This award is open to full-time Honours, Masters, or PhD students (domestic or international) who:

  • Are currently living in Australia

  • Began their enrolment in FY2025 at a WaterRA member research organisation

  • Are working on a project that aligns with WaterRA’s National Research Priorities Agenda

Assessment criteria

Applicants will be assessed on:

  • Academic achievement

  • A short essay on why their research project is important to the water industry

  • Examples of leadership within their university, the water sector or the broader community
