Water Research Australia (WaterRA) is pleased to share news of the newly funded Green Oxygen for Wastewater Treatment project, led by Barwon Water.

The Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) has committed up to $3 million to this innovative initiative, which will explore the use of pure oxygen—produced as a byproduct of electrolysis—to enhance water treatment at Barwon’s Northern Water Plant in Geelong, while also reducing emissions from wastewater treatment.

ARENA CEO Darren Miller said Barwon Water’s project will demonstrate how renewable hydrogen producers and wastewater treatment operators can collaborate to decarbonise, highlighting mutually beneficial opportunities between sectors through the clean energy transition.

“This will highlight the application for green oxygen and enhance the commercial viability of renewable hydrogen, offering unique learnings in navigating the regulatory, technical and commercial aspects of oxygen offtake,” he said in a statement.

WaterRA will contribute by facilitating knowledge transfer and promoting the project’s progress within the Australian water sector. We look forward to engaging with stakeholders and sharing insights gained from this initiative.

Stay tuned for updates on this exciting project!
