Water Research Australia is proud to announce that applications are now open for the Michael R Moore Memorial Award, an annual recognition of outstanding Honours and Masters students who demonstrate leadership, enthusiasm, and a passion for the water industry.
This prestigious award celebrates the legacy of the late Professor Michael R Moore, a respected researcher, mentor, and advocate for scientific excellence. Michael’s boundless energy, generosity, and commitment to fostering young researchers made an indelible impact on the water sector. His passion for research was matched only by his dedication to supporting students as they developed their careers—making this award a fitting tribute to his lifelong contributions.

Award value: $5,000 WaterRA Associate Student Membership
Who can apply?
This award is open to Honours and Masters by Research students who:
- Are enrolled in FY2025 at a WaterRA member research organisation
- Are studying full-time or part-time
- Are domestic or international students currently living in Australia
- Are working on a research project aligned with the National Research Priorities Agenda
What we’re looking for
Applications will be assessed based on:
- Academic merit
- A written submission on why your research is important to the water industry
- Demonstrated leadership in university, the water sector, or the wider community
About Professor Michael R Moore
A leader in environmental toxicology and public health, Professor Michael R Moore was an internationally recognised scientist, researcher, and mentor. Holding a PhD in Medicine and a Doctorate in Science, Michael’s work spanned multiple disciplines, including the toxicology of metals, risk assessment, air quality, and water research.
His career took him across the globe—from the University of Glasgow to esteemed roles in Australia, including Director of the National Research Centre for Environmental Toxicology (EnTox) and professorships at several Australian universities. He also had deep ties to international institutions such as the University of Cape Town and served as Chair of the WaterRA Board from 2008 to 2014.
Beyond his academic achievements, Michael was a dedicated mentor, always eager to support and inspire the next generation of researchers. This award continues his legacy, providing students with the opportunity to advance their careers and contribute to the future of the water industry.
