Webinar | Carbon Sink or Swim: Biochar win-win-win

May 20, 2021 12:30pm to 2:30pm

Explore the upcycling of biosolids into biochar as a win-win-win for environment, economy and community.

Biochar is one of six key Negative Emissions Technologies (NETs) identified by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) for atmospheric CO2 removal critically required to meet Net Zero 2050.

Biochar is also emerging as an input in wastewater treatment to adsorb contaminants of concern such as antibiotic resistant genes and pharmaceuticals prior to reuse of treated effluent.

An understanding of the quality and value of the biochar produced from various Australian water industry biosolids is essential to reduce uncertainty and inform decision making regarding thermal treatment processes.

Join us for this webinar to hear from Australian utilities on their experience with biosolids reuse and the production of biochar for thermal treatment processes as well as the latest research on pyrolysis and gasification technologies producing biochar for industry use.

This webinar will include presentations from:
  • Ben Bryant, Manager Environment and Sustainability at Icon Water
  • Lauren Randall, Program Lead Biosolids & Resources at Hunter Water
  • Dr Aravind Surapaneni, Senior Research and Planning Scientist, South East Water
  • Moya Lenaghani, Infrastructure Opportunities Advisor at Barwon Water
  • Q&A panel with Brendan Galway from Sydney Water and Deon Pearce from Coliban Water
  • Jason Mingo, Manager Environment and Technology Research at Water Services Association of Australia (WSAA)
  • Johanna Johnson, Sustainable Projects Lead,  Water Infrastructure Solutions, City of Logan
  • Craig Bagnall, Director, Environment and Regulatory , Australia New Zealand Biochar Industry Group (ANZBIG)
  •  A/Prof Kalpit Shah, Centre Deputy Director, ARC Training Centre for Transformation of Australia's Biosolids Resource
  • Final Q&A with all presenters
