Horizon | Annual Planning Event

Aug 4, 2020 10:00am to 5:00pm

.

Our annual planning event, Horizon puts industry needs firmly at the heart of our research program for the upcoming year and beyond!

Our annual planning event, Horizon is designed to engage industry members to review the collective research needs, identify collaborative research opportunities and plan our research agenda and knowledge transfer activities for the upcoming year. Industry members are then brought back together for our series of Horizon updates throughout the year to review the program of collaborative research opportunities and identify what research they would like to fund or investigate further through a problem opportunity definition (POD) workshop.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Whilst restrictions across Australia are easing, this year's Horizon Annual Planning event will be delivered online via Zoom, ensuring all of our industry members from across the nation are able to participate and contribute to the discussion.

Join us on 4 AUGUST

What to expect on the day...

Commencing at 10:00AM (Adelaide time) WaterRA's team of research managers will be setting the scene, updating you on our Value of Research project, and the outcomes of last year's Horizon event.

Participants will then break out into four bespoke workshops tailored around industry member feedback on priority topics. Workshops will run concurrently on the day commencing at 11:00AM (Adelaide time), scoping the collaborative needs of industry with members co-designing and co-developing potential research.

Concurrent Workshops

WORKSHOP 1
Water Quality & Security

-------------------------------
Safeguarding water quality and security is essential to improving resilience of services. This workshop, facilitated by Dr Marty Hancock, will explore your key research needs in areas including emerging contaminants, regional and remote communities, networks, treatment, validation and regulation.

WORKSHOP 2
Water Energy Nexus

-------------------------------
Technological advances and innovative concepts around the interplay of water, waste water and energy offer exciting new opportunities for utilities to become more resource efficient.  Covering broad areas of resource recovery, zero emissions and the water energy nexus including algal management, low energy processes and hydrogen economy, this workshop facilitated by Dr Arash Zamyadi, will contextualise the opportunities within our industry and discuss potential research ideas.
WORKSHOP 3
Catchment Health

-------------------------------
Catchment health has been under increased focus as the result of HBT- driven sanitary surveys and newly emerging water quality risks. Facilitated by Dr Kelly Hill, this workshop will explore your research needs to fill gaps in the areas of catchment health metrics as well as the management of catchments, considering risks and opportunities associated with e.g. inter-basin transfers, to enhance water security across the water supply portfolio.

WORKSHOP 4
Climate Emergency & Bushfire Recovery

-------------------------------
The key climate emergency affecting water utilities in recent times has been the scale and duration of bushfires across Australia. Looking at the needs of our utilities following bushfires, this workshop facilitated by our GM of Research Services Jacqueline Frizenschaf, will briefly outline the current state of play and the bushfire resilience framework, before exploring targeted research that will enable utilities to not only ‘be ready’ for the next bushfires, but also to recover better at scale for future resilience. Two key focus areas we will explore are: ‘filling gaps in catchment & treatment knowledge to be able to anticipate post bushfire water quality treatment challenges’ and ‘landscape recovery at scale for greater catchment health and treatability and yield resilience in the future’.

During the workshops participants will discuss key challenges and needs, helping to develop research ideas and potential projects to be built into WaterRA's research agenda and knowledge transfer activities for the upcoming year.

Workshop outcomes will be looked at in a fun and interactive activity — our Shark Tank — from 2:15PM (Adelaide time)

... introducing our 'Shark Tank'!

A specially-invited panel of industry leaders will join us as 'sharks' for the final part of this year's Horizon event. A champion from each breakout group will pitch the project idea developed by their group to the Shark Tank panel. The sharks will use their expert industry knowledge and experience to question the groups on the value of the proposed projects, ensuring they are robust and demonstrate benefit to the industry.

Every industry member organisation is encouraged to have multiple participants from different parts of their organisation. A representative in each of the online workshops is ideal to ensure your organisations research needs are expressed. Contact your WaterRA member representative if you are interested in attending.

Upon conclusion of the event, WaterRA's expert team of Research Managers will review the combined priority research goals and project scopes to develop a comprehensive program of collaborative research opportunities to be presented back to industry for investment in the upcoming year.

If you are interested in participating in Horizon this year, please you contact your organisation's member representative to coordinate the number of participants from your organisation. If you're not sure who your member rep is you can contact us on events@waterra.com.au and we can let you know.

Bring your interest, insight and imagination on 4th of August to explore how research can help shape the future for the water industry in Australia and identify what's on our horizon!
